Become an advocate --
Your voice can make a difference

Hunger is closer than you think. Consider these sobering facts about the challenges confronting our community. One in five New Mexicans lives in poverty. New Mexico has the second highest rate of food insecurity of any state, and the third highest rate of hunger.

Food banks such as The Food Depot make a critical difference in meeting the immediate nutritional needs of people who would otherwise go hungry. The emergency food assistance food banks provide serves as a vital bridge while longer term, more sustainable solutions are developed to address the issues of poverty and hunger.

Those solutions go beyond the capacities of nonprofits alone. They require the committed involvement of policy makers and government leaders at all levels -- city, county, state and federal. These leaders look to their constituents -- you -- for guidance on what’s important to your community. Your individual voice can make a difference for hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans in need.

Send a letter to your elected officials

At all levels of government, from the smallest village to the United States Senate, the voice of constituents can make a critical difference in how policy and programs are shaped. By taking just few moments to sign and send a letter (or send an e-mail) to one or more of your elected officials you can help increase government efforts to address hunger in our community. If you would like to contact any of your elected officials to help hunger relief efforts use the links below to find out more.
