November 25, 2015 — Coins for Cans Food Drive Donates More than 11 Tons of Food
SANTA FE – The Coins for Cans food drive hosted by Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino in Pojoaque has collected 22,076 pounds of food to be donated to The Food Depot.
This food drive donation is the equivalent of 18,397 meals to support Northern New Mexicans in need. This is the largest single food drive organized through The Food Depot for 2015.
“Northern New Mexicans are incredibly generous, especially this time of year. We thank Buffalo Thunder for hosting and promoting a food drive of this scale. Coins for Cans collected a record amount of food to help those struggling to put food on the table this holiday season,” Sherry Hooper, executive director for The Food Depot said. Hooper is available for comment at 505-577-0444 (cell phone number not for publication, for media use only) 505-471-1633, ext. 10, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
In October and November, Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, located at 20 Buffalo Thunder Trail, encouraged visitors to bring three cans of non-perishable food to benefit The Food Depot. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during those months, those that donated received $5 in free play to use in the casino.
The Food Depot is committed to ending hunger in Northern New Mexico. As the food bank for nine Northern New Mexico counties, The Food Depot provides food to 145 nonprofit agencies including emergency food pantries, hot meal programs, shelters, youth programs, senior centers, homes for the mentally disabled and shelters. This service enables these agencies to stay focused on their primary missions such as sheltering homeless families, providing hot meals to the homebound and offering life skills development to youth. The food bank distributes an average of 400,000 pounds of food and household products each month, providing more than 335,000 meals to people in need–the most vulnerable of our community–children, seniors, working families and those in ill health.
